Sam's Song
Editorial Photo Essay
Germany 2013

When Sam left his native Gambia he never imagined what life as a refugee in Europe would be like. This photo essay is a glance into his life in an asylum center near Reutlingen, Germany where he has been living for almost five years. When his petition for asylum was rejected Sam fell into a status that allowed for him to stay in Germany, but not to work, go to school, or do much of anything. Unlike many of the others in the home, however, Sam had one thing to keep him going: music.
