Shane McMillan is a freelance film director, cinematographer, photographer and journalist.
 

From the plains of the American West, to swamps of the Congo Rainforest, to the nightclubs of Berlin, he has peered through his camera in some very wild places. To date, Shane has worked on over a hundred commercial and documentary projects in over thirty-five countries: He’s scaled the Himalayas to film the source of the Ganges River, drunk a post-interview whiskey with activist Jane Goodall, and even exchanged winks with former German chancellor Angela Merkel. 
 

Shane’s most recent major directorial works are the three-part television documentary series Queer Pop for 3Sat / ZDF and the independent feature length documentary To The Sea. Further films include Carbon Bomb, Pure Elbe, Street Samurai and Can’t Be Silent for which he worked as director, cinematographer, or both. His work purely as a cinematographer has been featured in films for Arte, ZDF, 3Sat, RTL, Deutsche Welle, CNN, BBC and Vox. His journalistic work has appeared in the Der Spiegel, Architektur und Wohnen, New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor, Slate, National Public Radio (NPR) and the Guardian among many others.
 

His commercial work includes direction, camera or assistance on commercial projects for clients ranging from small brands to global players like Sony Classical, Coca Cola and NYX Cosmetics. His proudest accomplishment to date is helping shape the visual and brand identity of the search engine Ecosia, with which he has been collaborating with since 2011.   
 

In addition, Shane has served as a lecturer at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies and as a manager for artist Nan Goldin. Since 2019 he has been a regular lecturer at the German School of Journalism where he leads design sprints and teaches format development.
