Shane Thomas McMillan is a filmmaker and photographer investigating human connections to each other and the planet.

As director, co-director, and cinematographer, he has worked on over 100 documentary shorts and multiple feature films in over 25 countries since 2016. His work with an environmental and social focus has sprung from collaborations with organizations like the Jane Goodall Institute, Ecosia, and the Association for Wildlife Protection, among others. His images have been featured by Vox, BBC, and Arte.

In 2020, he directed the mid-length feature, Carbon Bomb, which explored the role of the World Bank in a corrupt and dangerous off-shore drilling project along the coast of Guyana. In 2022, he directed, shot and edited his first feature-length documentary, To The Sea, which followed a German chemistry professor as he swam the entire length of the Danube River.

Other feature films that Shane has participated in include the award winning documentary Can’t Be Silent, for which he worked as director's and editor's assistant. He also collaborated with director Samer Halabi Cabezón on the independently produced documentary Strassensamurai.
 

From 2014 to 2015, Shane was instructor of photography at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. From 2015 to 2016, he was the studio manager to the artist Nan Goldin.
 

Shane’s journalistic work has been featured in The New York Times, the Guardian, the Christian Science Monitor, Indian Country Today, Slate, NPR, and PRI’s The World.

Since 2019 Shane has been a lecturer at the German Journalism School.
